The app's primary function was to assist runners on location while filming TV shows, by providing access to digital versions of the many forms and other paperwork needed on site, which could sync over the web in real time with the main office.
Unfortunately on this project it wasn't possible to contact end users directly to inform design changes, so the changes had to be based on evidence in the app's user data, and my own experience of using the existing app. Despite the research limitations, it was a satisfying piece of work.
The app had been created using an old Android / Google SDK. As such the app had a slightly 'old Android' flavour.
After a few days of playing with the app and studying the database, I proposed my designs in a Figma board for discussion with the client. The full board is available via the button below. I've also included some "before & after"-style highlights on this page.
This image gives an idea of the overall changes I proposed: larger font sizes, softer / rounded edges on fields and buttons, a new logo that was more recognisable when grouped with other app icons and a WCAG-compliant colour scheme.
I suggested the addition of a warm & friendly tutorial carousel for new users, given there wasn't much in the way of help within the app itself.
There was a lot of strong colour use in the original design. I reduced that as much as possible, saving strong colours for buttons and other UI elements that more urgently require the user's attention.
Since it appeared to be frequently used, the 'share' function was brought into the flow when a form is selected from the list, streamlining the process,.
This screen was very text heavy. I tried to give each item a bit more room to breathe with a card-based layout, making sure the same information was available at a glance.
One of the challenges of this piece of work was minimising the potential changes to backend code such as APIs, so I had to be mindful of using data that was already available to the app.
After initial discussions following a review of the proposed designs, I created an interactive prototype in Figma to help convey the changes to stakeholders, including the offshore dev team.
A video of the prototype can be found below, or if you would like to try out the prototype yourself, use this button:
